How Does Diesel Exhaust Fluid Work?
As your diesel engine operates, it releases emissions. These emissions travel through your automobile. They ultimately make their way to the catalytic converter, where they can be released from the automobile, into the air surrounding the car. When a diesel exhaust fluid valve is added to the catalytic converter, the emissions encounter this fluid before they are discarded outside. DEF interacts with the emissions in such a way that it turns the emissions into a vapor that is much safer for the outside air. It reduces emissions and pollution.
How is Diesel Exhaust Fluid Injected Into Your System?
The most common way that diesel exhaust fluid is injected into your system is through a DEF valve. This valve connects to the catalytic converter and can be easily accessed on the underside of your automobile. When removed from the catalytic converter, it can be refilled with fluid. Refilling the valve routinely helps to ensure that there is enough fluid in the valve to reduce emissions from your diesel-powered engine.
How Should Diesel Exhaust Fluid Be Stored?
Once you learn how to remove the diesel exhaust fluid valve, refilling the valve is something that you can do yourself. However, you must learn how to properly store the fluid so it will work as designed once injected into your system. DEF fluid should be kept at around 60 degrees. This allows it to be stored for up to three years. If the fluid is stored in warmer temperatures, its life shortens. Avoid storing it at over 80 degrees. DEF should also be stored in the tank it arrives in. Do not transfer the fluid to another tank, or you can shorten the lifespan of the fluid. Lastly, always be sure to check the color of DEF before using it. If the color is off, the fluid shouldn't be used.
