When you are in the market for a used SUV, you have to go through a lot of research to find the best one as far as predicted reliability, features and price. When you are looking at used SUVs, that doesn’t mean you have to go with something that is eight or ten years old — you may be able to find even 2018 models that have been driven as rentals or dealer demos that have been turned back in.
1. Audi Q5
The Audi Q5’s second generation started in 2018. The SUV has more power and more tech. The Q5 has been Audi’s best seller for several years. Five passengers fit comfortably over two rows. The rear row has 37.8 inches of legroom. This smaller SUV also has more than 60 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat.
2. Ford Expedition
The Ford Expedition is also all-new for 2018. The exterior has a lot of aluminum, which means it weighs less and is better on gas mileage. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine with twin turbos provides plenty of hauling and towing capability – and still gets decent gas mileage. The ride is smooth, and the Expedition has tons of passenger and cargo space.
3. Hyundai Kona
The Hyundai Kona is new to the auto manufacturer’s lineup for 2018. The small crossover SUV has a lot of safety tech including a driver alert system and automatic emergency braking. You also get a head-up display in full color. The Kona is available with all-wheel drive or two-wheel drive. Choose a turbocharged or naturally aspirated engine.
4. Mazda CX-5
The Mazda CX-5 rates high with several different reviewers. It has athletic handling, but at the same time, it is comfortable. Not many SUVs can make that claim. Mazda used quality materials in the interior plus added a good list of safety tech including automatic emergency braking at low speeds.
5. Nissan Rogue Sport
The Nissan Rogue Sport is smaller than the Rogue and is made for smaller families. It gets good gas mileage, a good list of infotainment features and safety tech. You don’t have a choice of engines and may seem a bit low on power to those who are expecting a lot of power, but it does get out of its own way at stop lights.
6. Honda CR-V
The Honda CR-V is one of the best SUVs on the market. It’s spacious inside and has a ton of cargo space. Choose from two different four-cylinder engines – they both have a lot of power and get great gas mileage. The CR-V was recently redesigned with better materials and updated styling.
7. Chevrolet Tahoe
The Chevrolet Tahoe will seat up to nine people. The stylish interior is well-appointed, and you get a choice of several engine and transmission combinations. You also have a choice of four-wheel or all-wheel drive. Even with the V8 engines, the Tahoe gets good gas mileage. The cabin is filled with features, though cargo space is a bit on the small side because of the spacious seating.
8. Kia Sorento
The Kia Sorento, a midsize SUV, could be had with two or three rows of seats. Seating is comfortable no matter which configuration you choose. While you get better gas mileage with the base four-cylinder engine, the V6 or the turbocharged four-cylinder give you a much better driving experience. The Sorento also has Kia’s exceptional warranty.
9. Honda Pilot
The Honda Pilot seats seven or eight passengers, depending on the configuration. Even the third row has space for adults. The V6 engine has plenty of power and offers a smooth ride. Even if you go for the all-wheel-drive version, fuel economy is average for the class.
10. Hyundai Tucson
The Hyundai Tucson is a great family-oriented SUV that is quite practical. Choose from two different four-cylinder engines — both have good gas mileage. Combine the great crash test scores with Hyundai’s excellent warranty, and you have a great family vehicle.
