Camping Just Got Better

Camping Just Got Better

Turn your pickup truck into a camper! You'll have plenty of room for a bed, cooler, small camp stove and other necessities if you set the truck bed up correctly. Once you get the truck set up, you're ready for some summer camping and some fun outdoor time.

Beds for Trucks

You could get a specially made air mattress for truck beds, but putting it on the bed means that you have only the mattress between you and the cold floor. Instead, build a frame from 2-inch by 4-inch boards and plywood to fit over the wheel wells. You'll be off the cold floor, and you have more storage room since you will be able to store items under the bed.

Camping Accessories

You could spend tons of money on camping accessories, but you don't have to go quite that far. With a truck bed camper, you have limited space, so buy only what you need. Necessities might include:

  • A good cooler that keeps food and drinks cold for a week

  • A portable toilet

  • A 5-gallon solar shower

  • 7-gallon jugs for water

  • A propane stove

  • A propane heater

  • Extra blankets or a good sleeping bag

  • Flashlights and extra batteries or a battery-operated lantern

  • A good first aid kit

  • A frying pan or griddle, saucepan and cooking utensils

  • Paper plates and cups

  • Hatchet for cutting wood

  • A good pocket knife

Most things could be stored under the bed. Those that cannot but are in the way of using the truck bed could be stored under the truck or in the cab.

Keep the bed of your truck clean. It's a small space, so clutter just makes for a ho-hum experience. Plus, if you leave food out, you might have visitors trying to get into your truck bed when you're fast asleep!

Extras for Hunting and Fishing

If your plan is to use your truck for hunting or fishing trips, add the appropriate gear. Keep rifles and pistols stowed safely, preferably in a case or holster. Keep all of your fishing tackle in a tackle box to avoid getting a hook caught in an air mattress or your foot. Use a small toolbox to keep your hunting knives, ammo and other gear in one place.

Protection from the Weather

Add a pop-up canopy to set up behind the truck. It will come in handy if it rains or if you are in an area with a lot of sun. If you add screening to the sides, you'll have a screen tent to keep the mosquitoes and other bugs at bay. Bring extra plastic bags to store some of your items in the tent or under the truck if those items need to be kept dry.

Keep it Together

Finally, keep the bed of your truck clean. It's a small space, so clutter just makes for a ho-hum experience. Plus, if you leave food out, you might have visitors trying to get into your truck bed when you're fast asleep!
