No matter where you live, winter can be hard on your truck or car. When the weather starts to warm up again, it is incredibly important to take proper care of your vehicle to restore it to its prior condition and prevent further damage. Here's what you need to know.
Road Salt, Snow and Ice
When the weather is cold, you may find that there is snow or ice on the roads. Most jurisdictions apply road salt to help melt the ice, making the roads safer to drive on. Unfortunately, as good as this salt is for driving conditions, it can wreak havoc on your diesel vehicle. As the salt gets into the nooks and crannies of your engine, it can promote the formation of rust, and no one wants to have a rusty engine!
Not only can salt and moisture cause damage to your engine, but they can harm the finish of your paint job as well. Even minor scratches can let moisture in underneath the paint, causing it to crack, peel and oxidize. If you're like most people, your vehicle is your baby, and you want to keep it looking its best over the years. That is why it is so important to give your vehicle a thorough cleaning when winter is over.
Cleaning Your Vehicle Properly
It is not enough to simply rinse off your vehicle with water and call it a day. You need to use soap that is specifically designed for use on cars. While it may be tempting to just use your dish soap to wash your car, the chemicals in dish soap can damage your paint job, so spend the extra cash for a specialized car soap. Take care to get all of the dirt, salt, and grime out of your wheel wells, grill and other detailed areas.
You'll also need to clean the undercarriage of your vehicle, as this is the area that is most susceptible to damage from road salt. It is also the most difficult to clean, as it requires you to get down underneath your vehicle. Buy a spray nozzle for your hose to make this task easier, and be sure that it has a relatively powerful spray to blast the salt and dirt off the areas that you can't reach to scrub.
When you are finished cleaning, be sure to dry everything as thoroughly as possible. This will minimize the risk of rust and will prevent ice crystals from forming if the weather is still on the colder side.
