Why Buy Diesel? 7 Benefits of Owning a Diesel Vehicle

Why Buy Diesel? 7 Benefits of Owning a Diesel Vehicle

Diesel engines have developed a bad reputation for being loud, smelly and dirty. However, modern technology has made vast improvements on diesel engines that have helped them become more mainstream.

While less than four percent of all vehicles sold in the U.S. have diesel engines, that number is expected to double by next year thanks to those advancements. Here are seven main reasons more and more car buyers are choosing diesel:

  1. They Are No Longer Loud and Dirty: Today's diesel engines run quieter and are much less dirty thanks to advanced engine technology and the mandatory transition to ultra-low sulfur diesel. Now, diesel engines sound about the same as a regular unleaded engine and no longer spew big clouds of black smoke.
  2. They Offer More Power: There's a reason large semi-trucks have diesel engines: more power. When towing large loads, the added torque from a diesel engine is key, especially when it comes to climbing hills. If you purchase a truck for towing purposes, you should consider a diesel engine. Even though gas-powered vehicles tend to accelerate faster, diesel engines hold their power longer.Unlike an electric car, for which public charging stations are few and far between, diesel fueling stations are plentiful. Almost any gas station carries diesel fuel these days.
  3. They Are More Efficient: Diesel engines get better fuel efficiency than standard gasoline engines because diesel fuel is richer and burns slower. While diesel fuel costs more at the pump, it's much cheaper in the long run. For example, today's average price for a gallon of diesel is $2.50, according to AAA. But a gallon of diesel performs 25 percent to 30 percent better than unleaded fuel.
  4. They Are More Affordable Than Electric Vehicles: If you want to cut down on fuel usage, diesel fuel vehicles are a great alternative compared to pricey electric cars. Diesel engines are more expensive than regular gas engines, but they are significantly cheaper than hybrid and all-electric vehicles.
  5. They Are More Reliable: Diesel engines, on average, last twice as long as gas engines. When properly maintained, some diesel engines can last three to four times longer. Since diesel fuel is heavier and carries its own lubricants, integral engine parts are less likely to break down, meaning a diesel engine can go 400,000-plus miles without needing a major rebuild.
  6. Fuel is Easy to Find: Unlike an electric car, for which public charging stations are few and far between, diesel fueling stations are plentiful. Almost any gas station carries diesel fuel these days. Diesel fuel has been common for decades, and now more than 50 percent of all gas stations carry diesel.
  7. Europeans Do It: For decades, diesel engines have been the engine of choice throughout Europe. In fact, the U.S. Department of Energy says that 51.8 percent of all vehicles in Europe have diesel engines.
